A few banks offer an incentive of around £100 if you switch to them and have your salary paid in or pay in a minimum amount each month of maybe £1000. I have switched a few times to get a reward payment and found all were pretty much the same for service. First Direct may still offer this incentive and score highly on customer services. But I always end up reverting back to my smile internet banking account as my mine account. The service has always been good and I never forget my login details
I've got a Barclays Cash Card Account, which does of all of the 'day to day' transactions needed (such as accepting transfers from other people, paying out direct debits and standing orders, etc) but doesn't offer a cheque book or overdrafts. There's no monthly fee and the few bank charges which might apply (such as for bouncing a direct debit payment when I've got insufficient funds in the account) are far less than those charged by most other banks.

I have been with halifax for 22 years...since i were a kid. But loyalty does not pay where they are concerned. I pay £15 for the account, and £300 overdraft fee free. But i cannot afford the £15 anymore, so need to change to fee free current account. They cannot be bothered to help me :-( so hence im leaving them

You have one of the 'Reward' a/c with the Halifax if your paying £15 monthly. Get Halifax to downgrade it to just a Current a/c. I have a just got an ordinary Current Bank A/C plus £500 agreed O/Draft, with cheque book and Visa debit card. Obviously if you use the O/D then there are extra charges.
Must admit Halifax plc do not make it obvious you can downgrade. I have similar arrangements with the Nationwide B/S and I find them much better.
