Can anyone recommend a good savings account?

Preferably online. I aim to deposit between �100- �200 per month. I have looked at Smile and Egg so far. Anyone got any good feeback on either?

Within the last year (at some point or other) both Halifax and Abbey were trying to outdo each other with a "lock your money away and have no access to it" type account where the interest varied between 5-7% (I'm sure it went up depending on who was outdoing who).

Not sure if either account is still available (probably not!) but have a look at moneyfacts.co.uk for best buys.

Oh, there's also Abbey's esaver : that's not too bad but either way, check the "best buys" above.

The halifax web saver, with or without cashcard, the interest rates are good, transfer between other halifax accounts and branches everywhere to pay money in.

I recommend Cahoot if you have regular access to the internet. . They pay interest every month at 5.10% and you can access your money whenever you want. I think you can open the account with just �1 as well.

Steve21, the account you are refering to is the Halifax regular saver.  the idea behind the acc is to make a regular monthly pymt of between �25-�250, with a fixed interest rate of 7% Gross for one yr.  After your one yr period, the money you have saved, plus the interest you earn must be swept to another account.  There is no access to funds in this account, unless you close the account totally and lose out on interest.

And Jean88 is spot on, the websaver without a keycard will give you 4.9% gross, instant access with no penalties of restrictions other than its an internet only account.
