one pound in 1914 and yes I realise the q was dollars - bought what £10 did in 1972 the year of decimalisation and £100 of money now
and one sov or a pound in 1914 didnt change much in value from 1815.
and there you are - you have money inflation for sterling over 200 y in your head !
wow
yeah and two times when the pound deflated - ie bought more at the end than at the beginning and that is 1890-1900 and surprisingly 1920-29
but th sort ofe effect is peanuts - 1890 as 100 then 1900 as 108.9
I haven't checked but I'd have thought that inflation is the UK was much higher than the US on average and the increase in value of £1000 was much greater. I'd guess at least £20000; maybe nearer £30000
I know chuck- I was just trying to say that 'inflation' must have been much greater in the UK than is the US. Thinking about it, I think that £1000 in 1920 would be worth more than £50000 now, which is what I think PP has said
FF yeah the factor from 1971 needs adjusting up from 10x
my first decimal pint of beer was 13p and you cant get one for £1.30
but I er dont know what the going rate is since I have moved onto dry white or G n T.
oh god I have made a 10x error: lucky I am not at work
yeah just under 100k blush blush
The 1914-18 war was looked at the time as a time of Great inflation
however looking back on the second war and seventies,
WASNT that great - but was perceived so at the time b/c the value hadnt moved for 100 y.
