If you are being serious just ask for it back. SSE owed me £400. They put it back in my bank within 5 days.

British Gas owe us over £1,300 but they didn't write to inform us that they were lowering the DD.

Just tell em. Or cancel your DD. They can't cut you off without a warrant and they will look damn silly taking you to the Mags Court for a warrant when THEY owe YOU £2.5k.

Was intrigued to be told by the water company that they couldn't use an admitted overpayment of hundreds on one account here to wipe out a bill of a about fifty on another account here; both accounts are in the same name and at exactly the same address. That's taking the water.

Now, I can't see why you couldn't sue Southern Electric for the return of payment made under a mistake of fact. It's not much good their saying that their terms of business don't allow repayment or that it's to be construed as advance payment. The short answer to that is "What would happen if I terminated the contract? On what basis would you hang on to monies which were for a service and supply you could not provide?"

to be fair, the year before last my bills were astronomical and over the last tow years they have dropped considerably. I phoned my gas and leccy companies to discuss reducing my dd's because I knew why the bills had been so high and then reduced and that they wouldn'y be going up again (illness in the family) and both of them immediately said "oh and you'll want a refund too....

I can have £1k back but the rest will go towards reduced DDs. Their reason is Accounts Dept wont pass more than £1k refund at any one time.

It took me 4 calls, 2hrs waiting & arguing on phone. Am too tired to argue further.

Tell them that until the full total you are owed is paid back you are cancelling the D/D, then you will re-negotiate the D/D with them.

I spoke to Southern Electric today about a similar issue - not on such a grand scale as yours tambourine the young lady and that I spoke to was a pleasure to deal with and she sorted everything out and explained everything extremely well. Just give them a ring
