Divide by 5=£8....."24....16
Do "3 for me, 2 for you; 3 for me , 2 for you;...." until you have used up the whole £40.
Each "3 for me, 2 for you" uses up £5. Starting with £40 the dealer can afford to do it 8 times.
So that's 8 x3 for me and 8 x 2 for you
3:2 = 5 parts
40/5 = 8
each part is £8 therefore

3 parts = 24 (3x8)
2 parts = 16 ( 2x8)

answer £24:£16
Divide £40 by 5 (the sum of the ratios 3 and 2) and you get £8. Each part is £8 and the ratio means you have 3 parts to 2 parts so that's 3 x £8 (£24) to 2 x £8 (£16). If you add £16 and £24, it comes to £40 so it's correct.
