Funny how all the big energy companies don't want to put up their prices, but do!
Funny how they all put their prices up for the winter!
Funny how the government don't care a monkey's Sugar about old people!
The only ones not laughing are the pensioners!
They were good enough to fight for their country but not good enough to look after in old age!!
And they call this...Great Britain! No question here, just a statement!
I'm not a pensioner, just believe that they deserve better!

Why should pensioners be subsidised? Why not a decent pension and fair utility bills? Some pensioners are in a good position, Svejk. Like me, women were working and able to contribute to a private pension and the household income. We are of the generation able to buy a house which then increased in value hugely and now downsizing has given us a good bit of money...

I agree wimp !!
It's all about shareholders and how much money they can line their pockets with.
How about everyone in employment paying extra for their energy bills to help subsidise the pensioners?
wimp.......nothing has changed.

Funny how the miners didn't want to go on strike.
Funny how they went on strike before the winter.
Funny how the Government didn't care a monkey's sugar about old people.

I am a pensioner.......

What is different?

As I said sqad "Great Britain" take away the Great, because that word has long gone!
"The only ones not laughing are the pensioners! "

Errrm, im not a pensioner (though I'll admit it i probably look like one most days!) And I aint laughing either.
If you are an EDF Energy customer on a fixed tariff, be careful. Their two new tariffs Blue+ Price Promise March 2015 and Blue +Price Freeeeze March 2017 have both discontinued the Dual Fuel Discount and Direct Debit Discount. But they don't advertise the fact that these discounts are no longer available.
Couldn't agree more wimp.
Rubbish. They've never had it so good. And they know it.

Some pensioners are in a good position, Svejk. Like me, women were working and able to contribute to a private pension and the household income. We are of the generation able to buy a house which then increased in value hugely and now downsizing has given us a good bit of money to play with. We were also able to save.
But I am in my sixties and yes, reaping the benefit of when I was born. My mother's generation often saw the woman at home with no job and no pension and in rented housing. I don't believe old age is so good for them and I don't think it will be for my children's generation.

And Redman is spot on.
Perhaps we should distinguish between pensioners and octogenarians.

svejk...if it wasn't for the older generation you wouldn't be so well-off,not just in material things! think about it!life would be a lot different if the war was lost!
>They were good enough to fight for their country but not good enough to look after in old age!!

I know dozens of pensioners but I don't know any who fought in the war.

I agree with your statement gness!
Tilly, pensioners and octogenarians will very soon mean the same! I don't think I'll ever retire, just drop. Maybe the government should subsidise the energy companies. I'm not sure their priorities for our tax are the same as ours.
I think a lot of pensioners are also subsidising their children
I don't see the relevance of being a pensioner.
Fuel prices become more of a problem the less well off you are. That doesn't seem to correlate much with age to me.
Pensioners do get winter fuel allowance. And a few of those recipients are very well off. Many of course live in or close to poverty, but so do many non-pensioners
That was my point Factor but you put it so much better
Question Author
factor-fiction..".older generation".i said in my last statement. You may not know people who were in the war but millions do!
Your point is good too Pysbbo on two levels- some pensioners are struggling because they feel the need to support their children/grandchildren, and some pensioners (and other people) are so well off (and want to avoid IHT) they choose to spend a lot of money on subsidising their children.

You are correct to a point, Factor but we need to remember that the very elderly are less likely to be able to keep warm without heat. My mother's dementia made her refuse to turn on the heat though she could afford it and, despite our best efforts it hastened her decline and the need for her to go into care. Being cold and immobile affects the body so much and putting on extra layers and going for a brisk walk to get the blood circulating isn't always a possibility.

I am having dinner with my brother-in-law on Wednesday...he fought in the war.
