I have just received an email saying I have added a mr a Mahmoud to my payee list on 26 December
I don't recall having an account with rbs and certainly have not added mr Mahmoud or anyone else to my account (I bank with Santander)

Your lucky if you haven't had anything similar before. I'm sure most peopl'e spam folders contain emails about suspension of accounts they didn't know they had, suspensions of paypal accounts, HMRC refunds, voicemail messages sent by email, DHL/DPD couriers, offers from generous Nigerian benefactors.... The current most popular one is about an Amazon order.
If they don't address you by name then just delete them and don't even consider clicking on them out of curiosity.

Exactly how careful are you?

Do you have separate passwords for the various websites you use?

If one of those were to be keeping that password as plain text and was compromised would they be able to impersonate you on others?

Oh here's a tip

Try the website's lost password routine

They should always allow you to reset it - If they can e-mail you your password back watch out it means they have weak or no controls of your data
