Today I called BT to cancel my TV sport (I am with Sky) that I pay £10.00 a month for.
They said it would cost £16.00 to cancel, and I asked why the charge, to be told that it is normal for canceling.

Last year I cancelled my home insurance, and they wanted to charge me £31.00, which I refused to pay, even though I was receiving debt collectors letters etc, which have now stopped.

Surely its only a matter of typing a few keys on a keyboard these days, with these company's!

People assume that because they pay monthly they can leave at any time - this is simply not true. The company has priced the deal based on a minimum length of contract.

If you have signed up for a 12/18/24 month contract the company has every right to charge you for terminating it early.

Daisy - I don't think any reputable company will charge you for not renewing a product/policy.

They will (quite rightly) charge you for terminating a contract part way through the agreed period.

I was referring to not renewing, not cancelling whilst a fixed term contract was running. The Post did say not renewing.

The T&Cs for BT Sport say there is no charge for cancelling once you have completed your initial contract period

I have a mobile phone service - they provided me with a new iphone - is it right that I could cancel my phone service with no charge after a couple of months and just walk away with the phone? Obviously it isn't - the cost of providing the iphone is built into the 24 month contract period.

The same applies to any contract - whether for the provision of goods or services (or some combination of the two). The comment about 'typing a few keys' is utterly irrelevant.

And there is the rub. Whilst the first sentence refers to cancelling and to not renewing, both examples given are for breaking a contract entered into. It sometimes seems everyone can do that for free as their lawyers find loopholes, except the common citizen.

It would be illegal if the Company did not state it in their terms which you were able to view before accepting their deal.

trt: there is a huge difference between cancelling (mid-contract) and simply not renewing...a difference that you seem to be unaware of, given your first sentence.
