Morning all.
Does the government's plans to retire the trusty old tax disc worry anyone else?

At the grand old age of 93 the tax disc will be retired. We will not have to rely on a government computer system being correct as to whether tax has been paid - and we all know how reliable government IT projects are!

AB you arent 93 by any chance have you
Lots of comment about this - how will they know etc.
When the much vaunted ANPR ( automatic number plate recognition ) system came in - bearing in mind that it was not designed as a tax collections system ( hem hem ), 20 % of entries were inaccurate.[ But you scored 'inaccurate' if one character in the entry was wrong ] . I know because I was one of them.
A static data base which it was is quite cheap to run.
A dynamic system ( upt to date on the day of use ) is quite expensive.
( medical registration is in the throes of this ]
and so we should celebrate that using our money, the govt have finally got it up and running.
The big break thro was a few years ago when the police successfully tracked using the system the London terrorist bombers as they fled up to B'ham and Manch. A billion of sales, the next day apparently - to all the peace loving dictators of the world.....

There are a number of programmes on TV following various police forces on their road patrols. I don't know if it's included to make the programme more interesting but whenever the police contact base to check details, they always have a problem. This means both the police and motorist waste time waiting for the information to arrive. A quick look at a disc would stop that.
The basic computer system is already in operation and has been for about 20 years, that's how they send out those auto reminders. They'll know as now who is taxed and who isn't via ANPR. The main change is the actual need to have the actual disc. The system will just rely on the audit trail of payments. Any disputes will beinvestogated by looking at the bank transactions. Worry yee not!
Car tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You can use the green slip to tax your car online or by phone instantly.
