I got myself into a lot of debt in my youth.. But I'm slowly working my way back out of it again.. With the help of a guarantor and a consolidation loan. However, I'm looking to get myself a new bank account for emergency purposes (I currently have a cash card account with natwest) and I've had a couple of issues with them as have many people with their accounts going down leaving me stuck for cash!
However because of my poor credit, I'm struggling to get even a basic bank account. Has anyone else experienced this and can advise on which bank/building society is likely to help?
Work through the steps here to find out which accounts might be available to you:

(I had no problem getting a basic account with Barclays. After a while they wrote to me to tell me that they'd upgrade it to a normal current account).
The Cooperative Cash Minder Account will definitely help you, EllieJP. you get a Debit Card and it is a free account. There are no overdrafts allowed and you must stay in credit.
I was in a similar position as my ex hubby left me $5000 in debt. therefore I have rubbish credit. I was able to get account's with Barclays and Lloyds TSB with Lloyds TSB you do need to know a current customer.
