Should There Be A Referendum On Whether There Should Be Another Referendum

Nicola Sturgeon keeps on using another referendum as a weapon to get what she wants and then in the same breath says it is up to the Scottish people to decide on whether there should be another referendum on independence. I am in favour, bizarre as though it may sound of having a referendum on whether there should be another referendum with a promise that this was settled for the next 20 years. What do we think?

I think that can just get silly very quickly.I mean, does the country even agree whether or not we should ask the question about another referendum? And so on.

There won't be another referendum in Scotland unless there's enough public will for one. The vote in 2014 was close enough that the issue hasn't been settled, and there are potential changes that could well force another vote. But you may as well wait until these changes actually happen, if they do.

Unless you phrase the question as "Should Scotland be free to hold a referendum on Independence at its discretion?" then the idea of a referendum on a referendum is a non-starter. And even phrased in the manner I've suggested I think it's a legal issue more than anything.

Why on earth would you do that - double the cost. Just go ahead with a referendum if you must spend the money.

So, tell me anything she has "got" by using this "weapon". The new parliament has been functioning for only 24 hours! Apart from John Bercow's re-election to the role of Speaker, nobody has "got" anything.

It was Cameron who said independence was "settled for a generation", but the option is not his. If the SNP put a plan for another referendum in their manifesto for next year's election for the Scottish parliament and they gain an overall majority there yet again, they will have as much right to have that as Cameron has to set laws for the UK.
He has that right because the voters of the UK chose his party and he will be seen as an anemy of democracy if he fails to accord the same right to a party chosen by Scottish voters.

Is that what is happening ? I've lost a lot of interest in it.

This is all too common political strategy these days isn't it ? I know the EU likes to rehold any voting that go against the desire of the EU elite in the hope of a country changing it's mind, perhaps after a bribe or two. Why wouldn't the SNP try similar tactics ? Keep on asking until they get the answer they want ? as long as they are allowed to do that , they are likely to.
