Is it possible to become an accountant without gaining a degree first... going straight from A levels (AAB in Maths, Biology and Chemistry) with an AS level A in Physics and General Studies A Level (B). If so is it training on the job, do you have to study for an accounting qualification while training on the job or what? Or is it not possible? Is it only possible to go so far up the career ladder without a degree in this field? (I also posted this in the jobs and careers section, aswell as here incase any accountants viewing might be able to give me some advice).

Cheers

No you dont need a degree although having one will in some cases exempt you from taking some of the exams.  Although saying that in my last job the boss didnt take this option and would put us through all the exams which meant we had a good grip on the whole thing.

Have a look here http://www.icaew.co.uk/

Loads of information for you to get a better understanding of how it works.

In Local Govt they will sponsor you to sit your CIPFA qualification although you may be 'locked in' for a few years after.  Private firms will also sponsor you but dont always pay all that generously for students although they will pay for your study.

I was certainly sponsored through accountancy and auditing.

My wife is an accountant (ACCA) and she has no A levels at all - so it is possible to become an accountant without a degree or A levels. It has not hindered her career as she is now senior accountant for an international company.

She started off as an accounts clerk - so the experience that she had gained helped herto obtain her qualifications
