I have just had a rather unpleasant experience in my local supermarket and thwish to warn others to always, always check their lottery tickets.

I buy an eight-week lottery ticket, one line on Wednesdays and one line on Saturdays, for £32.00. During the past eight weeks, l have been lucky enough to win two £25.00 prizes and one free ticket for matching two numbers. I went back to the supermarket (a branch of a well known countrywide chain) this morning to pick up my £50.00 and free ticket.

I may be old and white-haired but l am not stupid.

The girl on the lottery till told me that l had won just the one free ticket and no money. I told her that l had checked and knew that l had won £50.00. She reiterated that l had won just a free ticket. So l asked for my ticket back (she had put it in a drawer under the counter) and she then reluctantly got the ticket out again and checked it. She apologised, gave me my £50.00 and said that she hadn't noticed.

I wonder how many times this sort of thing happens? A nice little earner for a crook and the till would balance at the end of the day. Please check your tickets.

Good advice, DSJ.
What an unpleasant experience.
Just goes to show that you cannot trust anyone nowadays.
I think I might have contacted the manager to complain.
Thanks for the warning.
I hope you reported her to the store? If she's tried to do it to you, how many has she got away with.
Any company worth it's salt should give you any losing tickets back.
doesnt that till play a little musical note for a winning ticket - and you can ask for a printed verification of your wins.
The shop assistant didn't pretend it was a losing ticket, Rocky.
This has been on here before quite recently? I recall something about when the ticket is scanned, if there is a lucky dip win, the ticket has to be scanned again to show up any cash win...so maybe not the girl being dishonest? I will try and find the link....

By the way, since the business of he woman in Worcester who bought a ticket after the draw and entered the winning numbers & then tried to say it had been damaged in the wash, l have always taken a photo of any new ticket l buy on my iPad. I have proof, even if it is stolen or lost, if it should ever win the big prize. Here's hoping!

I meant to say the woman in Worcester.
I buy mine online...all automatically timestamped and saved.
Same as woof; all bought on line.
Online for me, too. Winnings automatically paid in to my bank account, notification of win by email.
This is a known scam, but the more people who are made aware of it the better ...

Probably too late to do anything about it now, but it may be worth writing a letter to the manager telling them what happened and, on reflection, you thought it would be worth letting them know.
I am really really sorry DSJ someone spotted a white haired old *** and thought - "great here's another demented sucker to take to the cleaners"

problem with raising it with the mgt at X's is that they will just deny it

anyway glad it ended all right
and with your fifty quid you could go down to you local and buy 1/2 a pint of your favourite
( fifty knicker dont buy much nowadays )

Thank you, Mamya.
I have never understood why stores don't have 'self scan' terminals, so you can check your own ticket before presenting it to the assistant.

They do have them in Ireland and it's very reassuring.
I alwayspass the ticket back along with the slip confirming it hasn't won. If the customer tells me to throw it away I make sure I tear it up in front of them-covering my back as well as theirs!
