Hi, what proportion of a couple's joint income should be spent on housing rent? I heard a third is a good guideline, but is that before or after income tax? Does the proportion differ if one's renting in London?

Thanks

I heard somewhere as well that no more of your actual take home pay should be spent on rent.....but in London thats pretty difficult unless you have a super paid job or cheap place (like me)! I share with 3 others, and my rent is probably just over a third.

A landlord friend told me the calculation is no more than 30% of gross pay.

A landlord friend told me it shouldn't be more than 30% of gross pay.
