I have a registered company which has been trading for two years, but as i have to have hip and knee replacement , I wish to cease trading for 12 months . Do I just inform my accountant or do I have to inform customs house , vat, etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you have an accountant, just tell him. He will tell anyone else who needs to know. It's unlikely you'll be de-registered for anything though if there's a genuine intention to re-start down the line. Presuming you really meant "company" rather than "business" it will still need annual accounts completed and sent to companies house even if you are not...

Your accountant will need to still complete a dormant return by the end of your current accounting period or else you will be hit with fines!
A lot of accountants don't think you have to but you do!
