Anyone had this problem. If you’ve set up a direct debit for X amount to be taken monthly, why is it, if you pay a 1 off additional amount, the direct debit of the X amount isn’t taken that month.

As such if you have said 'please take £100 per month' and then you pay £500 they will not ask for the £100 as you have already overpaid the agreed amount. If you paid an amount less than the monthly then they would take enough to take it to the monthly amount.
I very often make additional manual payments to my energy provider and they still take the agreed sum every month (which is what I want them to do).
Some credit card companies operate in the way you describe, though. As long as they get the minimum before they ask for the DD they cancel the DD for that month
