they have labelled the savings account as dormant by the looks of it.
RBS closed mine when I left Scotland I kept £20 in an account as I knew I would return one day...when I did I found it had been closed due to inactivity and my dosh had gone to a charity account ! blummin' cheek !!
Didn't they write to you MM?
They can do it emmie - some accounts are just not economic to run. They should notify you though. They may reinstate it though if you ask

wow i would have been furious,
nope..I had moved to London..had to open a Barclays account..when I returned to Scotland I tried to pay money in and found out then it had been raided and closed...not a happy monkey !
Question Author
they didn't notify me at all, i just discovered by logging into my account.
Emmie...The can't do that without letting your know first.

Last week, I had a letter from Santander, advising me that as I hadn't used an old savings account for over 5 years, they were going to make it "dormant" But all I had to do, to keep it going, was to make any transaction of at least £1. .....in other words, put £1 in or take £1 out.

When I tried to do that, in a machine here in the village, I found out that my card had expired in 2014 !

I then went into Santander in town, put £5 into over he counter and they ordered me a new card, which should be arriving any day now.

The account only had £59 in it, and if truth was to be known, I had indeed forgotten about it !

Emme....has the bank written to you first ? Its unusual for a bank to that that without informing you first....perhaps you didn't recognise that letter, or mistook it for some junk mail, which is easy to do these days !
Murray, Did you give the bank your new London address? If not they will have written to the old Scottish one ,so you may not have had the letter.
Eddie..I had given them mum's address for correspondence..nothing received there about closure..they did send statements for a while which mum forwarded to me
MM is someone took £20 out of my purse and gave it to charity without notifying me I'd be fuming - it's theft! If they asked if I'd like to donate, then that's very different. Plus - what charity? Presumably there are charity you support more than others. I'm finding it mad to think a bank can do that!
RBS a pretty sh''ty bank even then !
seems they have a charity account that collects all the bits from closed accounts and they donate to various charities through some kind of board...
anthro-nerd...its highly unlikely that any bank would close an account with out informing you first.
Murray did you not think of just changing the account to a London branch of RSB, there are plenty of them.
not back then there wasn't Eddie..I was living between ST Albans and Watford only Barclays and natwest..was in London central for less than a year while we looked to buy...
I had a Tesco savings account that I used for only a few years, then stopped...leaving just a few quid in it. This was about 10 years or so ago. In the intervening years I've had some correspondence...usually updates regarding interest rates etc.
About a week ago I recieved a new card! ???
Lord knows how long ago the old one expired.

mikey
no letter at all, no notification, so seems really weird, i hadn't used it for years admittedly
Emmie....we get so much junk mail these days, that you may have missed any letter that was sent....its very easy to do !

Its probably not worth making a fuss for a few pennies, but have you asked what letter was sent and when ?
I think it's policy to write to inform customers that accounts are being closed so perhaps you did miss the letter as has been suggested. However, if they've transferred the money to your current account you haven't lost anything. If it bothers you though just drop them a line saying you're surprised they closed the account without informing you first - and see what happens.

naomi
will probably do that, yes they transferred the pennies, strange though to get no missive.
