Offhand, Does Anybody Know If You Can Get A New Debit Card From Halifax, Instantly?

as i dont live in the uk, my debit card will expire next month, luckily im going to the uk next month, so do think i should be able to get one over the counter, without any fuss?

My experience is that they might do that, if you explain that you are no longer living at the British address that you have registered with them.

But banks have to be mega careful of fraud these days, so expect some problems. Take as much ID with you as you muster.

I suggest that you contact your bank (the number to dial from outside the UK is on the back of the debit card) to discuss this. In the UK, banks tend to issue a new card about one month before the existing one expires.

You certainly won't get a card over the counter; they come from a card manufacturing centre. The normal procedure is to automatically send a replacement card shortly before the current one expires to the address to which your last card was sent.

Did you inform the Bank that you were going abroad, ?

Always a good idea, so that they don't have a fit of the vapours when they see foreign transactions coming in.

So they will have all the equipment to Emboss and Code a new card behind the counter, that's great service imo.

All you have to do is ring your bank and tell them your new address if it's different from the one to which your last card was sent. Sending a card abroad shouldn't be a problem

I was once *required* to collect a new bank card from a branch - because they had (erroneously) flagged my street as a hotspot for mail theft.

So it can be done - but I still think the bank may have an attack of the vapours if the UK address they have is no longer where you actually live ...

I once had to pick up a credit card from my branch, s-d, as I lived in a block of flats where the postman did not have access so all mail came through the main entrance.

...but the cards would have been sent to the branch from elsewhere. They are not made there.

Without any fuss ? In the case of a UK bank I find that most unlikely as my conversations outside the UK (and with foreigners inside the UK) indicate that UK banks are notorious for being ponderous - although I will say some of the criticism stems from the UK being less well organised than elsewhere when it comes to public records/systems.

Phone the bank and request a new card.But tell them you will pick it up from the branch when you are in the UK next. The card will be ready and waiting, just go to the bank show your ID and collect the card.

^ You could probably arrange to have it sent to the airport branch if they have one. Then you could collect it as soon as you get off the plane.

You could have a look at Metro Bank and think about changing to them or just have a second account with them. If you visit a branch to open an account you get your cards there and then; it's worth thinking about.
We opened an account with them about a year ago when we were about to lose our free-banking-in-Europe account with the Norwich and Peterborough BS (Metro do free transactions in Europe) and are quite happy with their service.
