Bank Does Not Want To Give Me A Receipt For Cash Paid In

I was unexpectedly paid for work today, so I took the cash straight to my bank, Santandar. I did not have my account details, but I had my driving licence with my photo and proof of my address.
They quickly found my account, and said it was no problem paying in the cash, but they would be unable to give me a receipt.
Even though Santandar are a reputable bank, I did not like the idea of handing over a few hundred quid without getting any form of proof, so I declined.

I assume it is some form of security measure.
Would you hand money to someone without getting any proof they had received it from you ?

Absolutely not.
No I would expect a reciept
I'm with Santander, and they always give me a receipt if I want it. They also offer to email one.

Perhaps it was because you didn't have the account details.
That's strange. I've paid cash into accounts with nothing but details written on a scrap of paper. Always had a receipt.

What's the difference between a scrap of paper and their computer screen?
I would expect an explanation to go with the refusal.

No way.

Hopkirk,

Yes, I normally take my Santandar card and put in my PIN number, and they ask if I want a receipt. The problem was I didn’t have my card (and couldn’t remember my password on my Santandar phone app).

I declined to give them my money, and will take it in tomorrow.
No I wouldn't....does seem a bit weird as you had ID on you, but might be because you didn't have your account details...I have gone in to my bank without my card, and they found my account on the system, but I had ID, to pay money in, and got a receipt no hassle at all.
Used to be with Santander..closed account and banked elsewhere....long story :-)
My bank didn't give me one when i paid £200 cash in with my card (I don't like paying in cash at those machines- perhaps I should use them next time). They seemed surprised and assured me it had gone on my card and was showing in my account and they didn't do receipts for card payments in. I was a bit flustered as there was queue behind me and moved away and then it seemed too late to go back and insist on one. Anyway, I checked my account when i got home and the money was in.
I can understand that a customer may be given an option to have a receipt for a cheque being paid in at a bank but a receipt for cash should be a mandatory feature of the system.

The argument they may put forward that a receipt would show your account number and be a possible breach of Data Protection does not stack up since you were able to provide id which was accepted.

I should complain in the strongest terms if I were you.

I cannot see any reason why they couldn't give you a receipt which showed that you paid £x into account aaaaaa

It is only a minor inconvenience, as I have to go into town anyway tomorrow.
I assumed My Driving License which has my photo and address which would tally with my account, would be sufficient proof.

Perhaps I was over cautious, it just seemed wrong not to get proof of a desposit.
You may wish to satisfy yourself that the amount has been credited correctly to your account when you visit tomorrow or at least check that fact "online" or via "telephone" banking - assuming you have to either/both of these facilities?
As has been suggested, Gromit, a satisfactory explanation from Santander is due and should be given, as you are one of their customers and at least deserve that.....and it has put you out, as you need to go in again now for something they should of dealt with for you today. Good luck G :-)
Would be interesting to know whether it is Santander only who refuse to give a receipt in such circumstances. I wouldn't be surprised as I don't have a high opinion of them. I wouldn't have left my cash without a receipt either.
^^ assuming you have access to either/both of these facilities? ^^
When you go back, see if you can get a detailed explanation - it would be interesting at least to see if there is a good reason or not.
Didn’t you trust that they would’ve banked the money and was worried that the teller was going to pocket it?

I throw all shopping, atm receipts away after I get home and am satisfied with my goodsas all they do is clutter up my handbags.

Was there a specific reason you needed the receipt? Do you keep them?
It's always reassuring to get a receipt for anything you either bank, buy etc .....the reason why Santander didn't want to assist Gromit today is the matter in question here.....what is done with the receipt afterwards is quite immaterial.
Would you bank £500, maybe £1000 and not want to get proof you paid it in, Jahulaye?
Well I wish I had £500 to bank for a start, lol. But yeah I see your point, on the odd chance of a computer glitch or hack and they say they don’t have any records of you paying in money it would become a nightmare
