My Mother was given a silver 2 pence coin dating from 1980. Could you tell me why this is silver and not bronze and is it worth anything (other than 2p!)? Is it a proof coin?

It could be a Silver Maundy Coin.

These are minted as 4p, 3p, 2p and 1p silver coins for issue by the Queen on Maundy Thursday to selected senior citizens.
I should have asked if the coin looks like a 'standard' 2p coin or has a different design?

I did see the coin about a year ago. As far as I can remember it was identical to a bronze 2 pence.
It does sound like a Silver Proof Issue, however this list does not indicate an issue for 1980 (although I do not know how comprehensive this list is).

Thanks for the replies kempie.

I noticed that weblink when I tried searching on Google earlier but as you mention it doesn't mention 1980 as a 'proof' year. In all honesty I didn't know silver 'bronze' coins existed until I saw the one my Mother has.

I have a silver 2 pence coin. But I made it in chemistry at school. Don't know what we did to them but it put a silver coating on them, maybe it is one of those. Probably not but just a thought :)
