I have heard a rumor that if you live or work abroad after graduating for a certain length of time then the student debt is cancelled. Is this true?

it is indeed true. but the length of time is until you die. as soon as you start earning a taxable income in england, no matter how long after graduation, you will have to start paying your loan back. if you intend to move to another country (that is not a member of the british commonwealth) permanently, then this is a great way to scam the government out of �x. idiots!

I am afraid that even if you decide to go bankrupt, your student loan is still repayable. As boobesque suggests - the only way of not paying is dying

There is of course another solution. Don't earn anything over �15K p.a. That way you won't pay anything back at all.

Or you could always pay it back to us at the minimal rate. My friend earned �16k and she only paid back about �12 per week. A small amount to ask for surely from what you benefited from us?

If this was a question on how not to pay back a overpayment of a benefit, we would call it BENEFIT FRAUD. Would we not

I'm sorry to say it but this question just about says it all about this generation of dependents/scroungers!

Never in the question did I suggest that I was intending on being 'dependent' or 'scrounging.' I simply just happen to have moved abroad with no intention of moving back, and was wondering what would become of my student debt.
