I went to Vodafone today in the High Street in my town to buy a new phone. I had the cash on me but I was told they could not accept cash as it was a cashless store. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. I had to pay by debit card. They said they were moving with the times as they think in 10 years time society will be cashless. Really? Behind me was an elderly woman who wanted to top up her phone with a £10 note they couldn't help her. What do others think ?

To them obviously money doesn't talk, but it can walk
Not, many of the older generation do not have a bank account.
I'm with you, I think it's totally ridiculous !! I will probably be accused of being a dinasour, but I don't care ...
Rubbish !!!
How would I play the 2p machines in the amusement arcades ?
Many older people don't have a bank account? Rubbish!
Society is indeed moving down that path - the biggest reason being , because of the internet .

There is more pros than cons of a cashless society
Not having to carry cash around on you , for security reasons - companies not having to incur the costs of processing cash

However there will always be a place for cash for some time to come yet .

Personally , i like to feel a bit of folding in my hip pocket
APG//Many older people don't have a bank account? Rubbish!//
Not rubbish at all.I know a few who do not have, and do not want a bank account.,
Perhaps I should have said do not have, and do not want, a credit or debit card.
People get mugged these days for their mobile phones and cash cards. Mugging never happened in the 50s when we all had pockets weighed down with heavy coins. Just imagine the chaos that would happen with mislaid , lost or stolen cards. Children would get targeted as easy pickings. Just think of all the extra paper that would be needed for all those millions more receipts.
I use coins and notes to teach my grandchildren the value of money, how to handle it and how to save it. How can I do that without cash ?
that it;s absurd, i still carry cash just in case..
it's inevitable...tattooed barcodes or implants..from birth.
what a frightening thought^^
A bad idea. I always have cash on me as without it I become invisible. A persona non grata.
I carry cards in case I run out of cash.
i have both also just in case..
cloverjo
i carry cash , in case i run out of cards
It is said that history repeats itself. If that is the case, then in the continuous history of transactional bartering, eventually we will be herding around goats and cows in order to trade with one another...Not a lot of people know this, you know.
Surely nothing to do with having a bank account or not.
Is it really the case that there are hordes of old folk straying into Vodafone shops with bags of cash only to be sent into the cold High St phoneless? I don’t believe it ...
