In light of the fiasco over sub-standard PPE from Turkey would now be a good time to try to re-introduce more home based manufacturing to the UK so that we become more self-sufficient? This would mean more jobs and local control over quality.

They may have been sub-standard, but they were much cheaper than the UK could have made them for.....
You have to ask why manufacturing disappeared in the first place.
what fiasco - I must have missed that
I agree entirely even though it means we would have to pay a proper price for goods and not expect everything at a rock bottom price.
Who's prepared to pay?
If I can buy something made and sourced in the UK I do even though it costs a lot more than an import. I am still grieving the loss of the British motorbike industry and really value UK made goods.
Bednobs, the 400,000 gowns are faulty and don't meet health and safety standards. You couldn't make it up!

what 400000 gowns? as I said I haven't seen that
anybody got a link?
Buy cheap, buy twice. We have already bought cheap, lets see what happens next.???
Home based factories couldn't compete on price. Cheap garments from Bangladesh where the workers are paid a pittance are in many High St shops.
I don't see anyone kicking the Turkish company for flogging duff gear
As I see it the Turkish company made stuff it considered PPE, it was up to the buyer to ensure it was to their standard, not waste tax money on lower standard gear because they didn't, presumably, check.

Buy cheap, buy twice ?
13.58, You won't see the Turkish company get a kicking because I guess Hancock knew that he had ordered a load of rubbish, to try and get himself of the hook here in the UK. That was until someone here medical wise, told him he had bought rubbish.
I wish my crystal ball was as good as your, teacake. Must need new batteries.
Why is it Hancock buying it all? We've got lots of highly paid Procurement managers in the health trusts- are they not helping source stocks?
16.34 You don't need a crystal ball, to see the obvious.
No, you just need perfect hindsight
Does anyone ever picture teacake as Alf Garnet?
What does sub standard actually mean?
