My Father was born 1915 and died 2001 in Canada. He was British born. On his death he left 2 million dollars to me and 2 million dollars to my brother. My brother living in Canada and still does went to see him on his death bed. There were 2 envelopes one for me and one for my brother. My brother studying in Canada at the time took both envelopes and put them in his bank account. I never saw my 2 million dollars. He says he needed the money for books and took mine. Im now skint and want it back. What would it be worth today and how do i go about getting it back. He would never hand it over if I asked. I am Canadian born but have lived in England all my life. We have a very unusual surname so the accounts i would think would be easy to find. My father & brothers accounts are in Canada AND MY ACCOUNT IS IN bRITAIN.

Wow!. hope someone can help. My gues is 2.5-3 million but depends how it was invested
Was it in your fathers Will that he’d left you this money?
4 million dollars must of bought alot of books!
You need a lawyer. There are potential limitation issues here since you appear to have known about this for some time. I suggest you contact a Canadian lawyer with experience of trust disputes asap.
Were the envelopes full of cash, or cheques? If cheques, how did he pay yours into his account?
Two million dollars in an envelope?
Or a cheque for same amount (how did he pay it into HIS bank account?)
And, just what books did he get with your two million?
If your brother has spent it, there won't be anything. Surely by now your father's account has been closed?
thanks for your timely advice Barmaid
If there’s was a Will stating money was left to each son, couldn’t ( yesterday) go down the legal route with this Canadian brother??
Didn't you manage to get this sorted in 2008?

I'm trying to figure out why yesterday has waited so long. And how can such a huge inheritance be contained in envelopes...just there for the taking. Even if cheques, his brother would not be entitled.
I don't understand...
Why is Peter Pedant thanking Barmaid, not Yesterday.

They were both cheques, he alsways denigned he had them and that it was hust a rumour. Its only because he thought I was getting back with a rich boyfriend which is not the case. I dont know anything about a will. My brother is now quite wealthy but wont say by how much. Im gutted.
There’s something just not quite right here I feel :0(
Your brother sounds like a greedy wicked bustard or a figment of your imagination - hmmmm, I wonder which.
You need advice from a lawyer. A cheque not delivered to you (in English law) is invalid once death occurs.

You either need to find out if there was a Will and what it said or if your father was intestate.

Get proper advice from a Canadian lawyer. You will not get the sort of advice you need from a website.
how do you know there were 2 envelopes? How do you know how much the cheques were?
Good point!
Hopkirk - PP always does that to Barmaid.
That is largely irrelevant seeing as the cheque was not delivered. Yesterday needs advice.
