The advantage to VAT is that everyone pays it - working and non-working, adults and children. Even foreign tourists pay it on certain things when they visit the UK.
VAT goes in to the general government coffers.

how do mean "advantage" - it's a tax it goes to the treasury like all the other taxes.

If you mean as an advantage over say a 'purchase tax' then where it really gains is it makes the collector responsible up the chain (collecting on the sale and deducting their VAT outgoings) meaning the VATman has a lot less work.

Otherwise it is simply another tax that disappears into the pot.

it isnt - it is a tax on consumption and so hits the poor more - coz they are hand to mouth and dont save - see?
we did it ( purchase tax previously) because of the need to tax harmonise in 1972 when we joined the common market ( yeah yeah I am not going to go into that)
