I remember doing a flight to Glasgow when it was the city of culture. My colleague said "Welcome to Glasgow, the city of culture" and she laughed. She got into a shed load of trouble about that.

It's a fine city, with some wonderful architecture, some excellent museums (including the National Science and Media Museum), great theatres, impressive art galleries and top-rated arts hubs, such as Kala Sangam.

I have Buenchico, though admittedly some years ago. It was by train and not an experience I’d care to repeat.
Who knows though, maybe I’ll go again some day and be pleasantly surprised?

The City of culture award is not about selecting which is the most cultured city, like an Oscars award or something.

It's about choosing somewhere that needs a bit of attention and investment for a year.

Thanks for that CHRIS. It appears that with multiple counties joining forces to win the title, "City of Culture" is now a misnomer.

East Suffolk Council, which covers coastal towns from the border with Essex (i.e. Felixstowe) up to the border with Norfolk (i.e. Lowestoft), together with those in between (e.g. Southwold and Aldeburgh), along with inland towns such as Woodbridge, Framlingham, Halesworth and Beccles, put in a joint bid with Great Yarmouth (in neighbouring Norfolk) to become the UK City of Culture:

Now that really is stretching the definition of a 'city' to its limits. If it had one, I wonder what they'd have called the 'city' as a whole, as saying that 'East Suffolk and Great Yarmouth' is the City of Culture just sounds weird to me!
