12 reassessments?
re asses S(men t )S
20A Think of a synonym for "severity" and remove a letter- the answer is apparatus used with horses.

24A "Hoover' is another example of the answer.

33A A classical architect- the answer is an anagram of "retail" plus "B".

13D A short word used to express disgust inserted in a four letter word for a dance, after an abbreviation for British.
30D Shorten "zombies", then solve the anagram for a type of African witchcraft/religion.
36D A common abbreviation for a day of the week, and move the "U" for "united".
20. The A is in the wrong place
33 the second E is wrong
36 I can see THUR becomes THRU but cant see how that gives a word for clear
36D is in "Chambers", bobbinwales. It's a synonym for "clear".
Thanks LancastrianOik... didnt know that. Like Matakari am abit of a novice on these cryptics
Bobbinwales, I think you do really well for a novice!
PS I don't think Matakari could be classed as a novice - we've been helping him for over 13 years.
Never short of a patronising comment about Matakari are you NAC?
There was no need for the NACW comment on Matakari
Bobbinwales, for clarity...I really like seeing others taking to, enjoying, solving new puzzles- the more the merrier!

Many thanks for the comprehenesive parsing, LancastrianOik and bobbinewales!
I am stuck on another set of clues.
15d Fleshy lad turned up in charge (7)
18a Dread being tense after fringe being cut by bishop (5)
johnpiper:
Charge is a 4 letter word beginning with C. Lad is a family member going up. Fleshy is the def.
18 is A new general sales tax. I do not know how it parses. Dread is the def.

I am stuck on 8d, 11d, 27d.
4 letter word for charge round reversed 3 letter word for male offspring
German word for mental dread = American word for hair fringe minus B for bishop + T for tense

8 d - usual abbreviation for long + 1 in cards
11d - fan of famous German composer of operas
27d - lug is definition and is slang for part of the body.
I now have 8d and 11d.
Crossers give me 27d but the answer does not make sense.

Lug wife away from fashion – difficult situation (3-4)
I have Ear-?or?
Second R should be L.
Ear worm fits. Bur....
OK so got it now ...hole
