Is Car Tax Payable For Drivers Who Get Attendance Allowance?
78 Answers
Could I have proof, ideally with a UK Gov link or a Citizens Advice link or someone who is in a position to know. Not guesswork please.
Apologies if that sounds snotty but I am already tearing my hair out having spent a day and a half trying to sort this out.
AA is supposed to be something nice the Government does for terminally ill folk.
Big thank you if anyone can help.

'You can apply for exemption from paying vehicle tax if you get the:
higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
Armed Forces Independence Payment
The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name.
It must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. It cannot be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use.'

I get AA and possess a blue badge. My wifes car is nominated on my Blue Badge discount scheme. Neither my car or my wifes car is tax free unless it is registered. We have spent many long hours in contact with TfL and DVLC. They are as useful as a chocolate fire guard. In order to get a 4 year period of grace from scrappage because my wife's car is non compliant we are obliged to show proof we are over 65yrs,receve AA, details of Blue Badge and vehicles on it. The sticking point is obtaining proof that her car is not entitled to be registered as Disabled. DVLC just kept palming off to DWP and TfL representative I waited hours to talk to worked in Accounts and had no clue about grace period. All he could do was advise us to e-mail Tfl with our query. The e-mail is about 3 pages long with several attachments which they ask for but we still await a reply since last week. You knock your head against a brick wall.Try telling these people that the car in question is NOT equipped with specialist appliances to assist disabled drivers i.e. swivelling seats foot controls converted to hand controls etc and is not therefore entitled to disabled tax exemption. We were not applying for that in any case.
Thank you everyone for your help. It seems you are all in agreement.
I have received free car tax for the last two years because I get AA as I am terminally ill.
How come I got it then but not now? If I'm not entitled then so be it, that's fine but I just don't get how I now can't get it unless there has been a change in the eligibility criteria?

Corby, if she got the exemption because of DLA or PIP the V5 would have shown the car as 'disabled/exempt class'. ladybirder would have had to send the V5 back to the DVLA when the exemption was stopped to get the car reclassified as PLG/diesel/petrol/alternative car (depending on the year it was first registered).
Barry I can't remember how I knew. It could have been friend at the time who was classed as disabled and he advised me. Or it could have been the nurses who tended my wounds at home after surgery or it could have been the doctor. I honestly can't remember. Happens a lot nowadays I'm afraid.
CBL I never got DLA or PIP.
