I have had to take over the family finances this summer due to my partners worsening Alzheimer's disease

I have received an email from Scottish power proposing a new package from end August . Rather than just agree I want to see if we can get a better deal - we currently pay approx £250 monthly for just electricity for a small bungalow - we have no gas and oil central heating

Am I best to get various quotes from companies or let compare the market do it for me

thanks in advance - the loss of the £500 fuel has hit us badly

Look at your last bill and write down how much you are charged per KW and how much the standing charges are.

If you have your electricity bills for the last 12 months work out how much electricity you use a year.

This information will help you use the comparison sites effectively.

Use USwitch, Compare the Market and MSE Cheap Energy Club.

It's all a faff but it could save you a lot of money.

Take note of exit fees and decide if you want a fixed or variable tariff.

Not sure what you mean - no gas but you have oil CH or you don't have either?

If you have oil CH, £250pm seems too much just for cooking, lighting, TV, etc. I think.

Whatever you do, I'd suggest leaving Scottish Power...widely regarded as a poor-performing energy provider.

Thank you all for replying and giving me some ideas - I have til 30/08 to sort so it's my BH challenge to go through your suggestions and review our options , yes we have oil central heating , and I do think the monthly tariff of approx £250 a month has been high - they say they will move us onto a standard tariff if I don't respond which is only approx £150 a month but to me there must be a catch if they are offering me a deal £100 less ... !

To put it into perspective we have a 5 bed detached, no gas with oil CH and our electric is about £120 pm.  We are with EON Next, no contract, submit our meter  meter reading each month on line.  We do have separate rates for day and night and put washing machine and dishwasher on timed overnight.

How much are you currently paying per KW? Have you built up a lot of credit?

Sounds like you are on and are being offered a fixed tariff.  They are traditionally more expensive than svr but when rates go up they may well be cheaper. You have to decide if you want certainty or a little volatility

barry; shouldn't you say KW hour, rather than KW?

I'm also hopeless at this stuff and will ask OH later but we are with scottish power and pay less than that a month with them for all gas and electrity together and we have a 4 bedroom detached house with gas central heating and that I have on a lot. What you're paying seems grossly inflated.

me - 2 bed flat, gas CH & electric, £100pm. Octopus.

£250pm for electric alone is extracting the wotsit!

I am with scottish power for both gas and electric on a 4 bed detached house and pay between £80 to £100 a month in total. So I am shocked at you paying so much a month only for electic. Has scottish power been given an accurate meter reading? Maybe they been overestimating for years!!!

i'm with Octopus, 4 bed detached all electric. Winter monthly £134, just reduced to £69 for summer.
