Would I be surprised to see a report of a passing police car stopping to deal with the theft of an IKEA cabinet by a member of the public?

I would not.

Our 'authorities' are pretty much not fit for purpose.

Round here we leave them on our property with a note, not on the pavement.  There's too much street furniture without people dumping their unwanted stuff on it.

I see loads of this, books and things left near the pavement for people to take, what annoys me is members of the travelling community won't recieve a fine for fly tipping

It seems a bit excessive given that it was outside their property so clearly weren't just dumping it. But without knowing how accurate the claim, that it was worth passing on, is, and noting there doesn't seem to be any notice indicating it was free for anyone who wanted it, left for four days and would have been for unknown number more, well a line has to be drawn somewhere so they did themselves no favours.

The woman could have offered the cabinet on Freegle or

FreeCycle , excellent sites which I have used. I just post a pic of the goods I wish to give away and wait for the answers. I have given away over 75 items which I leave in the front porch or outside the front door for collection.

I wouldn't class this as flytipping. It's an attempt to get rid of something responsibly gone wrong.

I thought city councils had been 'encouraged' by London not to do this

We use Freecycle a lot, too

Yes, her indoors puts in on some place for free, usually goes pretty much immediately.

£500 fine seems a bit excessive in this particular case especailly as Webbo points out those who prefer to live in wheels are not prosecuted.

We'd a leaking radiator a while ago, plumber had an arrangement for someone to collect it, I helped carry it down the drive and propped it up against the wall, within minutes I heard a screech of brakes, went back down the drive to see one of the transient Transit pick up people driving off down the road. At least it gave the plumber time to cancel the collection.
