How it Works1 min ago
I have underpaid tax to the tune of £3,353. I know I have to pay it all back by 31 January 2025.
I also have to pay back all my child benefit as my earnings for last year were over the threshold. In order to do this I have had to register for self-assessment which I have done and I have received a UTR number. I have not received a confirmation email and cannot view the form online (it doesn't appear to be there) but surely if I have been given a UTR number, this means it went through okay?
What I also want to know is when do I have to pay the child benefit back by? Is it also 31 January 2025?
Thanks - I'm a bit clueless about these things.

Meanwhile it is best to phone them to ask your immediate question but I'm fairly confident that child benefit overpayments are due via the self assessment process so the by end of January.
I've now heard back from HMRC and they're saying that I don't owe them a penny. This is really boiling my pi**.

This must surely be a mistake? If you earn over a certain amount you have to at least pay back all your child benefit and what happened to the £3,353 they say I underpaid in income tax?
