Can a shop decline to accept say �7.00 in 5 pences to pay for goods that you are buying from them. I thought that they had to accept coins as it is legal tender

Yes they can decline if they wish. They don't have to serve you at all if they don't want to, for just about any reason or none.


Legal tender has nothing to do with it - it relates in some circumstances to repaying debts already incurred - not to everyday shopping.


5ps are only legal tender to �5 anyway.


They are a beggar to count - worse than any other coin.

dzug is correct, "the management reserve the right to refuse service" for any reason they do not have to explain either.

Legal tender is only really relavent in relation to making payment and in essence is for the shop keepers benefit not yours.

It means they can reject payment based on something not being legal tender rather than the reverse of having to accept it because it is.
