Help!

i've recently moved out of a house i shared with my so called friends. i received our final gas and electric bill in and they are refusing to help me pay it. i don't know what to do cause it's in my name and the gas company said they will come after me for the money, not them. any ideas on what i could do?

Pay the bill. You are legally liable.

Sue them in the small claims court.

I would do the same as dzug, and keep a record of any conversations, correspondence etc from your former flatmates, including dates ansd times. That way, you will appear more organised and reliable than your flatmates therefore have more chance of a successful outcome. Also try citizens advice bureau

I work for an electricity and gas company and the previous info is correct. I always advise students to have all their names on the account because that way everybody would be chased.

However, you should speak to your company they would chase you solely for the debt but if you are unable to pay it in one amount you could get them to spread it over a longer period of time so you dont have to pay it in one amount.

If their names are on the tenancy agreement you could also send that in to the company and say that they account should have been in all names when it was opened and not just yours. If you have proof that they lived there and used the gas then they may add their names to the account and then also chase them for the balance as well. Although, it would still be a 3rd party issue and they wouldnt get involved with acutally working out who owes what at least they wouldnt just chase you for the debt.
