Mastercare Insurance

My son bought a fridge/freezer about 5 years ago and had the Mastercare extended warranty, this states if the goods are unable to be repaired they will be replaced like for like, no mention of any reductions etc. This fridge/freezer has been repaired a couple of times but about 3 weeks ago failed again and was this time deemed unrepairable. The voucher sent by Mastercare can only be used at Currys and is about 100 less than the price of the same fridge/freezer, Mastercare refuse to increase the voucher value stating 'that is what their price list says'.
In desperation he used the voucher for a cheaper fridge/freezer.
He phoned the insurance ombusman who told him as he had accepted another replacement they could not intervene, had he not had a cheaper replacement it would have taken at least 5 weeks to make a decision which may or may not be in his favour. This would have left him without a fridge for some 8 weeks at least.
Is there anything he could or should still do to get the fridge/freezer replaced like for like as the policy states.

You don't actually need them anyway in a majority of situations as whoever you buy the item from has responsibilities towards you and the item for up to 6 years (depending on lifespan of product) under the Sale of Goods Act. Fair enough these dwindle over time, but if it saves you a few hundres quid on a cr@p warranty then must be worth it.
