For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It's only allowed if there's a specific condition in your contract relating to the responsibilities of the management team in regard to financial losses. Even then, many lawyers would probably argue that any such condition would fall foul of the Unfair Contracts Act (and therefore be invalid).

PS: I'm hoping that Erimus1 reads this post and responds. He's a lawyer - I believe that he's likely to agreee with me but I'd appreciate a second opinion!
PPS: If Erimus1 (or someone equally authoritative) doesn't post, I suggest speaking to your union rep (if applicable) or to your local Citizens' Advice Bureau.

There is a section on the DTI website about deductions from wages here. The Employer has to ask you to agree to the deduction in writing BEFORE making it. You can make a complaint to an Employment Tribunal. If I were you, I'd speak to ACAS on Monday, the number is 08457 47 47 47
Buenchico, i'm afraid that I would have to disagree about incorporating such covenants within a work contract. It is point blank illegal. I agree that some employers may include such things within a contract but this does not mean that they are legal - people seem to automatically assume that just because it says something in a contract, this is correct and quite lawfull. It is for things such as this that the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 was created for. There is similar legislation for specifically for illegal covenants within consumer contracts which can be found in the Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulatiosn also.
Do bare in mind also that you are due the moneys back, inclusive of any interest.
