at what age do you have to start paying tax this is for my cousin who is 17 and in a job at the moment and is confusedxxx

actually, there is no minimum age for paying tax, but as has been mentioned it depends on the amount of income. Once it is above �97 a week then tax becomes payable. 16 is the minimum age for National Insurance Contributions.

You start paying tax the day you are born.


However the single person's tax allowance for 2006/07 is �5035 so most children don't have enough income to pay tax. �100 a week is just over this so there will be a small amount of tax to pay.


What can cause confusion is tax in a part year. If your cousin didn't work the whole of LAST tax year he's unlikely to have paid any tax as the allowance would have covered all his earnings. This year it will be assumed he will be working the whole year so he'll start paying.
