Are Good Friday and Christmas day holidays?

Is it true that neither of these two days are Bank Holidays and are in fact religious Holidays, is it or also the case that if your employer requests you to work on these two days that you are obliged to.

They are religious holidays.


Depending where you are they are also bank holidays - England and Wales yes, not sure about Scotland and NI.


Working depends on your contract of employment - if it's silent on the subject I'd say yes, if it was a day you would otherwise work.

Good Friday and Christmas Day are holidays in Common Law in the UK. Neither are defined as Bank Holidays in the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, which is the relevant legislation.
