between us hubby and I earn about 38,000, but we would love to have a smallholding to raise pigs, more chooks and more veg.just 2 acres or so and a house whether it needs work or not.
the problem is that they are all 200,000 to 400,000. how is anyone supposed to be able to afford them ?!!
I dont know anyone who could raise that much to buy a property like that.
Does anyone out there agree or are we the only ones who think that its silly money?

I'm in the same boat, we live in the country (Somerset) but you seem to need upwards of 170k if you want to have a somewhere with even a small garden...unless you move into a town of course. We've on a bit more than you but even then without a deposit we're scuppered.
Most of the bigger houses seem to be brought by older people you have sold up or are brought as retreats/country pads by city commuters.
Have you tried the estate agents that deal mainly with farm and country properties, not the High Street ones that mainly deal with renovated country properties.
Try looking for a property in a small town or village preferably with a largish garden for your veg. then maybe you will be able to find some land a farmer doesn't want and either buy it or rent it for pigs and chickens.
A lot of fields here are being divided for horse stabling for people who live in the towns nearby.
Ok its not ideal but you may be in the right place when someone wants to sell a better place before it goes through the estate agents.
Have you any ideas of whereabouts you would like to move to? Give AB an ideal area you never know someone may be able to help.
