I think the procedure with credit card firms is the same - tell the card issuer to cancel the monthly charge.
If you are paying something like a gym membership by monthly payments from your credit card, do check the terms and conditions on the contract with the gym.
No - it's different with credit cards unfortunately. You have given the company that is taking the payment a continuing authority to take it. You have to cancel it with them, not with the credit card company.
It can get awkward if they don't stop - it will be very difficult to get the credit card company to do anything about it, but persistence can pay off - eventually.
