Finding VAT number of a UK company

Is there a quick cheap method of finding out the VAT Registration number of a UK business, if one knows the business name and registered address. This company won't co-operate and tell me.

If you look at the HM revenue and customs web site they have a link to a page offering disclosure under the freedom of information act. I don't know if obtaining a VAT number is part of that remit but it's worth a go. If not send HMRC an e mail asking if they can give you the info.

Any way of getting some kind of letter, etc. from them? Some companies put VAT no. on the letterhead.

If they have charged you VAT, they are legally obliged to give you their VAT number. If they don't, don't pay the VAT element of the bill.

If you have already paid, report them (or threaten to report them) to HMRC
