how can I find out if I have inherited anything? for free?

The short answer is you can't.

However, if you have inherited something, the executors are duty bound to make reasonable attempts to trace you.

If you think you have inherited something from someone specific, you can get a copy of their will (once it has been proven) from the Probate Office in the area they died. There is a small fee though.
