Getting your name taken off a mortgage

My brother had a mortgage with his girlfriend for 6/7 years, they split up 18/24 months ago and he is still waiting for his name to be taken off the mortgage. His ex is paying the mortgage with her new partner, but my brother is haveing to rent whilst his name is still on this mortgage. How does he go about getting his name taken off. He has no money to pay for a solicitor because he's paying off her debts ( from credit cards in his name). Any help would be great

He would need to do what's called a "Transfer of Equity". This will involve solicitors, but other than remortgaging the property and removing his name that way, this is only way that he would be able to do this.
