does anyone know of a low rate on a self cert mortgage and whether the company will accept someone who has a credit default?

Yes. Company called Amber Home Loans have some great self-cert mortgages for people with small credit problems. I don't think that they are available to the public though. Speak to your local friendly mortgage broker.
