This would be almost unavoidable if he was bankrupt. It could also happen if he did not comply with the terms of a County Court Judgment and the creditor then got a charging order.
He really should not go on ignoring the situation. Get independent advice - CAB, CCCS or Payplan.

Despite the good professional advice above I get the impression that your husband doesn't listen to anybody. So I advise you to look after yourself first and this may mean applying some' tough love' as one would to a child.
The longer you leave things the more destructive your relationship will become(my opinion only).
As an immediate measure stop joint accounts immediately or you may end up with nothing.
Get anything of real value to you out of the house/residence and away from the bailiffs before you lose it all.

To put it into perspective. You are only liable for JOINT loans and financial commitments. Even if you are a second card holder, you are not liable to his debt and will not carry is credit worthiness on your record. You can contact the credit history agencies and check your record to be sure.
I would advise CCCS for help and advice but obviously he has to talk to them. He does sound like he is sticking his head in the sand and hoping it will go away, which I am afraid is the attitude of many people so he is not alone.
However, and I dont mean to sound harsh, but how on earth did he get so far into debt without your knowledge? What has he spent the money on?
