Would it be cheaper to live on the outskirts of a city or closer to the centre and why?

Housing near the outskirts is usually cheaper - but is offset by travel costs if you work in the centre. I'd guess that in general the extra travel costs are not as much as the extra housing costs to live in the centre.
I think that you need to add lifestyle into the equation. Taking into cosideration such things as noise and facilities such as coffe bars, pubs,clubs and football grounds nearby on a saturday.

'coz houses are larger away from the centre wouldn't that mean they were generally more expensive
