does being in your overdraft affect your credit rating?

It'll affect your credit score with that bank although not too much if you stay within your limit all the time.
It shouldn't have anything to do with your credit rating (i.e. credit search results from experian or equifax) unless, again, you go over your limit and abuse the account.
As long as you don't go over your limit this would have a positive effect on your credit file, as it shows you are capable of repaying debts.
