I would imagine it will just be sitting on file, especially if the bailiffs have tried and failed. It can stay there for quite a few years, and if you register somewhere else then they could tie you up with the old account and chase you for it.
They won't care that your brother pocketed the cash, it is your responsibility to ensure it gets paid.

Nonetheless, Carol Anne is right in that it is possible to go to prison for non-payment of Council Tax (it has happened to at least two pensioners recently).
For bailiffs to have come there must already be a liability order (from the Magistrates Court). If the Council track you down they will almost certainly come after you for the money. It may be that they have written it off and nothing will happen, but you cannot be certain. May well be best for you to contact them and arrange payment.

Lucabene, all that **** about your brother spending the money sound more like something out of the pages some low-brow magazine.
Come clean, your'e just some tax dodging weasel who puts upon the rest of us, and on that note I hope you do end up in the slammer!!
Council tax isn't treated by the courts in the same way as any other debt. You don't pay and the baillifs get no satisfaction then a warant is automatic. Looks like you've been lucky.....so far.

First of all...Yes...You can go to prison for none-payment of council tax. It happened to someone i know.
Secondly, contact the council, and ask them, dont give them your new address yet. If you have been abroad im sure they will be helpfull.
But deal with the council, and NOT the ballifs, as they would'nt have no sympathy, even with there own granny.

Thanks for the replies. I just phoned the coucil tax and they said the period I was in the house for was settled. I told them I owed and they said im not liable for it. Can someone outthere tell me who will be as I definately owed 900 and it wasnt paid. Is it the new house owner cause if it is my brother bought it off me so tough luck on him.
