I am sure that they will be happy to do so. Banks are a business at the end of the day and if all their customers took more money than was actually in their accounts imagine what would happen. Lets face it some people will always take what isnt theirs and wont pay it back. Do you want to pay for their irresponsibility and perhaps dishonesty? I dont!
If some of their customers cant or wont conduct their finances correctly then they should pay the penalty. Everyone one who opens an account is told of the fees, so ignorance is no excuse.
In the end the banks will end up charging fees for all transactions and everyone with an account will pay fees. And that in my opinion is not fair on the people who do conduct their accounts correctly.

Actually I don't think the issue is with having to pay bank charges - anyone who runs a bank account knows that if you go over your agreed limit you get charges and that is fair. The real issue is with the amount the banks are charging and I have to agree that 35 is pretty high for going over the limit. Perhaps they should have a scale of charges - so much for an initial warning with increasing charges if it's not put right or is ignored. It's a bit simplistic to say that anyone with a bank account should know how to use it because situations arise when people exceed their limit but perhaps talk to your bank if you know this will happen.
Or perhaps we should have banking systems like other countries. French customers have to buy each cheque book - bet they never turn up whinging they've lost it. Americans don't know what overdrafts are cos they don't exist over there - they have to take out loans.
Learn to budget, include savings in it and have a cheeky little revolving facility (go on ask a bank clerk what it is) for when there's too much month left at the end of the money.
I don't agree with paying 60, getting 3 points and paying more for insurance when I drive a bit faster and haven't killed anyone today. Nuclear weapons are a bit over the top too but they're just a big deterrent as well.
