driving without insurance withou knowing

To my surprise I was stopped by the police. I thought I have an insurance to my car. I do my insurance by direct debit. I would never drive a car without insurance. I always make sure my wife car and family member car have insurance. When I came home and check , to my surprise my insurance has not been renewed. I have records of all my insurence over the last 8 years. Now I dont know what my punishment is. I know some people intentionally refuse to insure their car and take the risk and other guinuelly forget to do so for what ever reason. does the law has any consideration for those with good history of insurance cover and as oversight thought they have insurance but later found out not to have? It is an uncomfortable experience to be in. Shouldnt this people be made to insure their car immediately and may be a fine instead off all that harsh punishment which I think will not make any difference in those who take the habbit of not insuring their car.
