Polish Vehicle insurance/road tax requirements on UK Road
2 Answers
I have been approached by a friend who works with a Polish gentleman. The polish gent has been living/working in the UK for a year, and has brought his Polish registered car here to use. He has a polish insurance policy with green card, that allows him to drive on UK roads, and also has a UK driving licence. As this car therefore is polish, he needs to know at what point he needs to buy road tax if he stays in UK. (As i understand, it is not required as a visitor for x? amount of time) His biggest issue is that UK insurance is 3 times more expensive here, but can someone clarify at what point he needs to tax his car here. (I have found out that he will ofcourse need to buy insurance in UK before he is able to tax his car at the post office. Also, any pointers as to if/when he needs to re-register his car here? Any advice gratefully received! The guy wants to be fully legal and safe on UK roads, which is nice to see. Regards, Chris

A visitor to the UK may use a vehicle displaying foreign plates, provided that all taxes (including vehicle excise duty) are paid in their country of origin.
However, if the use is not temporary then the vehicle must be registered as an import.
